I will now switch to English for the sake of the French language!
First I would like to say that I am very happy and excited both about the upcoming PotBS pre release launch and about using the game and the guild to improve my French, its two good things packed up in one for me :corsaire:
About me:
I am 32 years old, have a 4 year old daughter and live in Cascais, which is a really nice village near Lisbon. Cascais is a "traditional Portuguese summer resort", and back in the 40's Cascais was called a "sister village" to the French town of Biarritz, so the two towns share some architectural and style similarities. I feel that since the 40's, Biarritz remains "truer" to the original concept and Cascais was a bit "globalized" and perhaps even "spoiled". That said, Cascais has better weather :) Anyway, I lived in the UK and the US when I was younger, but am now settled in Portugal.
Professionally I started out doing computer science at the university, then I worked as a consultant for a few years, then I did an MBA and now I work as manager. So I kinda "moved away" from computers into management and these days I dont do any programming at all. Currently I am studying psychology in my free time as a hobby, so I wonder if I am personally taking a journey from "hard technical stuff" to "soft human stuff" as I grow older. Anyway, my job allows me to travel a lot around the world and management is about working with people, which are sometimes harder than computers, but much more fun for me!
Personally, my main interests are:
- Literature: I like France because of the writers, NOT because of Napoleon!
And France has WONDERFUL WRITERS!
- History: If we cannot learn from the past, we are bound to repeat our mistakes in the future, etc, etc
- Windsurfing
- Skying: In the winter I go skying, either to the Spanish Pirinees or to the French Alps that although being expensive, have great snow!
- Cinema: I used to love movies, now I am taking a break from them
- Games, games, games. Name a boardgame, computer game, role-playing-game, tabletop game, whatever. There are 99% chances that I either know the game or have already played it :)
And now, the answer to the question:
"why is a Portuguese player siding with France in PotBS? Why not England or Spain?"- Portugal was pretty absent from the Caribbean history, we had our "geopolitical interests" elsewhere, namely in the Orient, Brazil and African colonies. As far as I managed to learn, there were only a couple of Portuguese pirates and corsairs present.
- Why not Spain? The Spanish had taken the throne of Portugal in 1580 and we took it back from them in 1640. So most Portuguese in 1720 hated the Spanish! Besides, since Spain is our only geographic neighbour, we have NO ONE ELSE TO HATE!
- Why not England? Portugal had a long lasting alliance treaty with the British in 1720. Actually, it is still in practice and it is the oldest alliance treaty between two Countries in the world! However, it is my opinion that the British always used the treaty more to their advantage than as a true alliance, and they always benefited the most out of it. So England is a "no no" for me.
